We will, no doubt, hear a good deal about "killing bin Laden" tonight. Few will wipe away any tears. But the great Steve Coll has lengthy piece at the New York Review of Books on a subject I (and few others) raised in the hours and days immediately after the fatal mission: the failure of the administration, and the media, to state the obvious: that this was a kill-only mission.
New books makes this chrystal clear, and Coll describes how bin Laden and two others were finished off while "writhing" on the floor. And we are reminded of the four days of claims, swallowed by a compliant media, of the non-existent "firefight" at the compound. I hammered that at the time, and now Coll details further. Not to cry over bin Laden, but Coll shows how this fits in with other current "execution" policies, such as drone strikes.
